Description:

These are sites of extraction and the resultant degraded landscapes they leave behind. They represent a wide range of spatial conditions, from open pits, flattened mountaintops, and terraced slopes to lakes of standing water, piles of spoils, and a range of hazardous conditions (sheer cliffs, open portals, undermined areas, etc.)

Coal: They represent the vast majority of sites in the mines category. Most of them are located in Appalachia. The mining of coal occurs in two primary ways - above ground and below ground. In many sites, surface coal mines are required to engage in some level of ‘restoration’ after mining is complete. This restoration typically involves the seeding of grasses on denuded mountaintops and slopes to reduce erosion. Due to their scale, location, and condition, many sites in this subcategory are ideal for NCS or bright fields intervention.

Mineral: The key difference between the two is the assumed contamination levels of each. Mineral mines are likely to have less contamination present than coal mines, due to the lower toxicity of the materials being mined and chemicals used in the mining processes. Greatest challenge presented in the classification of this subcategory is inferring the ground condition (eg. surface mine or subsurface mine).

Harzards: They have little to no potential for productive reuse (NCS/ brightfields/ recreational transformation). These are sheer cliffs, portals to subterranean mines, shaft openings, active fires, and other site conditions that pose direct hazards to people and wildlife. These sites, though not directly ‘useful,’ must be sealed and fenced wherever possible, to avoid the injuries and deaths that they can cause.
